FEDERAL BUDGET 2026-27
SUMMARY AND FULL COMMENTARY UPDATES
The 2026-27 Federal Budget was handed down by Federal Treasurer, Dr Jim Chalmers on the evening of Tuesday 12 March 2026.
Lowe Lippmann is pleased to provide the following commentaries, explaining the key issues released in the budget.
This Federal Budget delivered a number of tax changes which had been identified in the press during recent weeks, however many of these changes have gone much further than initially forecast. The two big significant changes associated with housing from 1 July 2027 include the replacement of the CGT 50% discount with an inflation adjusted system and limiting negative gearing claims to new build housing, with some grandfathering concessions available. More surprising was the introduction of a minimum 30% tax for discretionary trust distributions from 1 July 2028, which appears to have been only introduced in very recent weeks, however the start date may provide time to consider restructuring where necessary.
